Evils of Being a Workaholic

Are you one of those who have no time for family, friends and relatives? Have you ever realized the root cause? Maybe you are a typical workaholic.

Excessive addiction to work causes workaholism. The lexicon definition of workaholism says,” When an individual’s relationship with his or her work competes with other important relationships, he or she is said to be a workaholic.” For such people the utmost and the only priority is work and nothing else. Unending drive for perfection is also an important reason for certain individuals to be highly indulging in their work, to the extent of being a workaholic.

For workaholics, work becomes not only a compulsion but an obsession. They want to be surrounded and absorbed in work all the time- be it office, workplace or home. For them work is like ‘first love’, everything comes after it. By nature, man is an active go-getter. It is both a blessing and a curse. Being a go-getter is a ‘blessing’ because it brings out the best in us. We try to outshine all obstacles and hindrances, and achieve the targeted goal. It can be a ‘curse’ because sometimes, in an attempt to do the best, we land up being too indulging in work.

Who is a workaholic?
Workaholics try to excel in their endeavors. They are basically result-oriented people. They are successful in accomplishing targets and this further propels them to achieve more. They have a non-satiated urge to work.

Generally, a workaholic has following exhibited symptoms:

• No time for friends and family
• Restless if not doing work
• They have so much of surplus energy that sitting idle is not their cup
of tea
• Home becomes their second office
• For them sleeping and enjoyment is sheer waste of time
• They have few or maybe no friends at all
• They might read or discuss work during meals
• Work is their best buddy and they relish it’s company

Being workaholic is an emotional imbalance and its effects could be far serious than anticipated. Too much working causes the brain to secrete certain chemicals, which make them intoxicated. The undying desire of being important is what leads to their excessive hunger for working. This desire makes them work more and more, thereby causing a continuous release of the intoxicating chemicals. This is a fierce cycle which entangles every workaholic.

Common problems faced by workaholics are
• Inability to concentrate properly as the mind’s threshold is exhausted
• Feeling tired most of the time
• Insomnia
• Indigestion
• Peptic and duodenal ulcer
• Addiction to alcohol and beverages
• Frequent headaches
• Chest pain

Workaholics are in a perplexed and baffled state of mind. Their thinking habits are highly affected, as they are socially cut-off. They are not socially comfortable with other. They have few friends and associates. They are hardly interested in attending social gatherings.

In a nutshell, it can be stated that working is normal but excessive indulgence is abnormal. Excess of everything is harmful. Let’s keep a harmonious balance between work and family. Life is for living, and not merely for working. We work to live and not live to work!
